TerraSAS ETS Series — Standalone Terrestrial Solar Array Simulator

Ametek Programmable Power

The Elgar TerraSAS ETS Series is a compact, standalone photovoltaic (PV) solar array simulator combining an agile power supply and an innovative I-V curve generator in a single rack unit. Featuring low output capacitance and high closed-loop bandwidth up to 30 kHz, the ETS is designed for testing grid-tied solar inverters, micro-inverters and DC power optimisers.

  • Standalone PV simulator: power supply + I-V curve generator in one unit
  • High bandwidth: up to 30 kHz closed-loop (critical for high-speed MPPT testing)
  • Low output capacitance: accurately reproduces AC ripple on DC input
  • Voltage models: ETS60/80/150 (micro-inverters), ETS600 (isolated string), ETS1000 (non-isolated string)
  • Multiple units can be connected in parallel for higher power or in series for higher voltage
  • SCPI remote control via Ethernet; optional GPIB; GUI software included
  • Real-time I-V curve display updated 20× per second
  • 1-year standard warranty

Modern solar inverters use advanced MPPT algorithms that actively probe the I-V curve of the connected PV source by injecting ripple current onto the DC bus and measuring the response. This means the PV simulator must accurately reproduce the AC ripple behaviour of a real solar array — a capability that conventional power supplies with large output capacitors cannot provide. The TerraSAS ETS achieves this through a fundamental redesign of the output filter stage, reducing capacitance by an order of magnitude and extending the closed-loop bandwidth to 30 kHz. The real-time I-V curve display at 20 Hz allows engineers to observe the inverter's operating point and MPPT tracking behaviour dynamically during test.

30 kHz MPPT Test Bandwidth

10× lower output capacitance and 30 kHz bandwidth accurately simulate the AC ripple behaviour of real PV panels — enabling validation of even the fastest MPPT algorithms.

Complete Voltage Coverage

From 60 V micro-inverters to 1,000 V non-isolated string inverters, one product family covers the entire terrestrial PV inverter market.

Real-Time I-V Display

Dynamic I-V curve display updated 20× per second provides immediate visual confirmation of MPPT tracking behaviour during test.

Scalable for Higher Power

Multiple ETS units connect in parallel for higher power or in series for higher voltage — enabling string, multi-string and system-level inverter testing.
